Projects never seem to slow down on the farm. We go from one busy season right into the next. Right now we are occupied with loading soybeans and corn onto semis to be sold. For the month of July we have a total of 50,000 bushels of corn to sell and 10,000 bushels of soybeans. We are loading soybeans out of two bins that are off the main farm a few miles. We had issues with the floor sump working properly due to bean pods plugging the holes in the floor. We had to by-pass the floor unload and use the grain vac instead. Cleaning out bins is easily up there on any farmer's list of favorite things to do. Imagine a giant sauna filled with dust and loud noises, now you can picture the environment. Not only did we run into auger issues, we also ran into motor issues on the unload. The unload motor that was on the unload was only a 110V single phase motor that over-heated with relatively small loads on it. Luckily we recently purchased a new to us auger that had a 220V single phase motor on it that we were able to swap out.
Grain hauling is not our only main activity during this time of the year either. We also have corn post spray and bean post spray to apply. We spray this round of pesticides to control weeds before the plant shades out. It is very important to keep weeds out of fields as weeds pull nutrients away from the crops we are trying to grow.
