NOTES:

I have tried the plastic mats, I've tried pine shavings, and I finally settled on hay. In another, more fancy system my eggs would roll back out of the box and away from the hen, but in a regular old nesting box, hay is winning so far.

Like anything on farm your nesting boxes will get gross if you neglect them. Eventually that hay breaks down and becomes dusty. If a chicken takes a big dump in there or an egg breaks it's a real mess. That and I don't like that it gets really dusty because I worry about the particulates in the chickens' lungs.

We/I swap the hay as needed when they get gross. We also just do an overhaul when it looks like they all needed. With anything on farm you just have to be observant and keep the welfare of your plants and animals in mind and you'll be alright.

Raising chickens for eggs can be an enjoyable way to get your protein. Maintaining the nest boxes in the chicken coop is a must for clean eggs.

The more you care for your birds the more the chickens care for you.
