We start inside RAGT’s state-of-the-art glasshouses, where plant breeders begin the long process of creating new varieties. From crossing parent lines and managing high failure rates, to artificially generating multiple seasons in a single year, this is modern plant breeding at scale.
As the journey continues, we look at how varieties are selected for different markets, how rust resistance is bred in, and how data, GPS systems, plot drills and fertiliser spreaders all play a role in narrowing thousands of plants down to just a handful of potential commercial winners.
This is a rare look at the science, time, and risk involved in breeding the crops that underpin global food production, and why it can take many years before a new variety ever reaches a farmer’s field.
