We are right on the eve of the big off. After holding our nerve and waiting for moisture, drilling is about to begin, and as James explains, this is the part of the year that makes him most anxious, more so than harvest, because as much as 60% of next year's yield is decided by getting the drilling right. In this episode we get everything into position and plan the huge logistical effort of keeping four drills fed, along with the water and the spray operation that has to run alongside them.

It is an honest look at the costs too, from a set of tracks and a cultivator rebuild to a seed dressing bill that runs to tens of thousands of pounds. We also revisit the chemical in the spray store to set the record straight after your comments, busting a few myths about Roundup, glyphosate and what the labelling does and does not tell you.

With the new yard almost finished and the kit coming home, everything is poised for the drills to roll. From the anxious wait to the first seed in the ground, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
