The cultivations roll on, and this week we push onto the new farms we have taken on, working some of the hardest, driest ground the team has ever seen, hard enough to snap subsoiler legs at walking pace. With no proper rain in sight, we face a genuine roll of the dice, whether to gamble on drilling our expensive hybrid rape seed straight into the dust now, as our Australian friends would, or hold our nerve and wait for the heavens to open.
There is real momentum too, with the two new 18 metre drills arriving any day, and we run through how the drilling teams will work once the weather finally lets us go. We also get a full tour of the accommodation trailer, now taking real shape, and look in on the last of the combine cleaning.
To finish, an honest word on the market, from a comparison with the famous drought of 1976, to a potential world wheat shortage, and how hedging our fuel has just paid out to the tune of £33,000.
