A proper special this week: we leave the farm and go ship-side to see how liquid fertiliser actually reaches UK fields. Guided by Lord John Fuller OBE of Brineflow (Nitrasol), we welcome a vessel carrying 50,000+ tonnes from Trinidad into the Port of Sunderland and follow every step, from pilot boarding and tug manoeuvres to pipelines, tanks and quality controls.
On the pilot boat we meet Port Director Matthew Hunt, then head aboard M/V Schwyz to the bridge with Captain Ravi and down to the engine room with Chief Engineer Mahesh.
Along the way we unpack the logistics that keep British agriculture moving: bunded storage, ballast and water-cleaning systems, pipeline transfers from quay to tank, and how this product ultimately becomes the nutrition our crops rely on.
Back on site, we look at why fertiliser matters, how Brineflow schedule ships (and even races the weather to avoid fines), and what it takes to safely store and distribute thousands of tonnes to farms like ours.
If you’ve ever wondered how fertiliser gets from a refinery in the Caribbean to a sprayer in Cambridgeshire, this is the full journey, told from the bridge, the quay and the tank.
Tell us in the comments: what part of the supply chain do you want to see next, refining, rail/road haulage, or terminal loading? And don’t forget to subscribe for more behind-the-scenes of a real UK agribusiness.
