After a long, dry wait, this is a big milestone. All of the oilseed rape is now drilled, and in near textbook conditions, with the first proper rain in weeks finally forecast to arrive right on cue. In this episode we get the last of it in the ground, and look at the logistics challenge that comes with going bigger, because keeping two 18 metre drills fed means moving as much as 80 tonnes of seed a day.
It has not all been smooth. We work through a relentless run of breakdowns as the brutally hard ground takes its toll, with hitches snapping and frames cracking, and a big winter rebuild already looming. We also make a clever change to the sprayers to cut wasted chemical, and check in on the cut down cultivator project that is proving its worth.
Looking ahead, the merchandise trailer is being loaded up ready for the Grandstand show, and we are off on a trip across the Atlantic to the Farm Progress Show in Des Moines. From the last seed in the ground to the rain we have waited so long for, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
