With the drilling all but done, the farm is eerily quiet, but it has been anything but a quiet week. In this episode Simon takes you around a post drilling farm, from the sprayers getting a deep clean down in the new yard to the combines going through their winter servicing, and explains the thinking behind possibly moving to even wider 54 metre booms.
It was a rough weekend up in Lincolnshire though. We show the damage left behind after a hare coursing vehicle was chased across our freshly drilled fields, where it was the recovery trucks and police cars that did the real harm, and then just days later the gates at Newton were smashed open and diesel stolen. We also take a close look at the farm’s ageing sun tracking solar array, the first of its kind in Europe, and the costly headache of keeping it running, which has us weighing up battery storage to fight those rising energy bills.
Looking ahead, there is some exciting news as we become an official marketing partner for a big show in January. From the aftermath of drilling to an honest look at rural crime, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
