Drilling is all but finished, with a remarkable 7000 hectares in the ground since the 21st of September, and the harvest meals finally coming to an end. In this episode we reflect on an enormous campaign and explain the honest economics behind a big decision, dropping all of our spring crops this year after three dry summers left them below the cost of production.
The highlight is a fascinating sit down with the team from Syngenta about hybrid wheat, branded Xterra, which many believe is the next big step forward for the crop after years of plateauing yields. We are hosting one of the largest field trials in the country, and we get into what hundreds of millions of pounds of breeding has produced, from improved rooting and drought tolerance to the likely yield uplift, and the one big downside for a farm like ours that loves to save its own seed.
We also arrive to a nasty shock from East-West Rail, lift the first of the sugar beet in bone dry conditions, and say a big thank you to the team who fed us for the whole harvest. From the end of drilling to the future of wheat, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
