With the farm quiet and most of the team on holiday, this is a tidy up and sort out episode, and an honest look at the costs that never usually make the camera. We are having a real purge on the lorry fleet, replacing damaged panels and parts to keep everything bang on, and it gets us into a genuine problem, the spiralling cost of accidental damage across the business, and how you even begin to track and tackle it fairly. We also show a small bit of plastic that we cannot buy on its own, forcing us to spend £700 on a whole panel, ten times in a month, and the clever 3D printed fix we are hoping will solve it.
Over at the grain hospital the big upgrade is well under way, with a wall moved forward and the floor dropped to make room for the new colour sorter that has just arrived from Denmark. We take a look at the work in progress and explain what it will do for the business. We also sit down with Lizzie to talk grain trading, where the market is after the autumn spike, why we have been selling for cash flow, and some genuinely useful new features on the Hectare platform.
From the true cost of the little things to a grain store transformation, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
