After a relentless, remarkably dry campaign, the drilling is finally done, bar a small tidy up behind the sugar beet. In this episode the adrenaline starts to come down as the team shift into the big autumn clear up, freeing up the yard, grassing down the new areas and turning their attention to the winter jobs. We also move the farm office into a new open plan space, something James has never done before.
It is an honest one on the business side. With some punchy chemical and seed bills to pay and the grain market not having moved the way we hoped, we explain what it means to become a forced seller, and why the milling wheat premium is barely worth chasing this year. We also share some genuine progress on the chemical container problem after a visit from the manufacturer, look back at how well the seed dressing trailer worked, and hear from the team on the issues they nursed the drill through all autumn.
From the end of a huge campaign to a frank look at the numbers, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
