From Field to Pint, Growing Our Own Barley to Make Beer

This week we harvest one of our most unusual crops, a small field of Arrow spring barley grown for one reason only, to brew our own beer for the Cereals show. We are joined by Rob from RAGT, who has spent years breeding barley, to talk through what makes this variety special, and he even climbs aboard the Lexion to cut it himself. We also work out just how many pints you can get from a single field, and set ourselves a rather ambitious target for next year.

It is an honest look at a dry season too, as we explain why so much of the region's barley is struggling to hit malting spec this year, and what that means for the crop. Away from the beer, there is a clever project on the go as we cut a new cultivator down to size, a comedy horse riding lesson, a breakdown scare on one of the tractors, and an update on the accommodation trailer nearing completion.

With only the mustard left to cut, the end of harvest is genuinely in sight. From field to pint to the last few acres, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
