It is mid October and, remarkably, we are still talking about a drought. In this episode James walks the newly emerging wheat and rape, which are coming through a good two weeks later than normal after one of the driest autumns in memory, and explains why this heavy clay land is so difficult to farm this late in the year. There is real frustration too, as the area East-West Rail occupied has grown again, leaving us with 20 more hectares stuck the wrong side of the fence despite asking for it to be marked out in advance.
It is a quieter week around the farm, so we catch up on the winter jobs, from the hedge cutting, where we explain exactly why we leave the fruit on for the birds, to the combine and crawler servicing, the new forklift being kitted out with cameras, and the weighbridge being recertified down to the last 20 kilograms. All of this with a very keen three year old farmer in tow, as daddy daycare meets filming.
We also look ahead to hosting 70 London school children on the farm, and finish with an honest word on a grain market that stubbornly refuses to move. From the first green shoots to the jobs that fill the winter, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
