With harvest behind us, the focus is now a relentless eight day push to get the cultivations finished before we move onto the new farms we have taken on. In this episode we battle on through rock hard, bone dry ground, and after a lifetime of complaining about rain, find ourselves doing something that feels almost alien, praying for it. Everything now hinges on a good soaking to get the crop drilled.
We also open up the business side in a way most farms never would. We spend around £13 million a year on inputs, and James explains why finding savings has become the single biggest opportunity in the business right now, more valuable than farming itself, along with a rather painful story about just how much prices can vary. There is honest frustration too at yet more fly tipping, and a hard look at why the promised fines are proving toothless even when the culprits are caught.
Elsewhere the welding course pays off in a breakdown, the tracks and cultivators keep the workshop busy, and there is a birthday to mark.
