With the weather finally on side, drilling is in full swing and the conditions could hardly be better, dry on top with moisture just below. In this episode we get the four drills into a proper rhythm across the barley, and are honest about the teething problems that come with a new season and new machinery, from bent coulters to a metering unit clogged with barley awns.
The heart of this episode answers a question a lot of you have asked. Why are we so obsessed with controlled traffic farming and ever bigger machinery? James walks through the journey from driving on 82% of every field down to just 15%, the goal of getting to around 10% as we move to wider sprayers, and what it really delivers, an 18% lift in yield and a 13% saving in diesel, all by controlling exactly where the machines drive.
We also walk the huge flushes of green after the rain, keep an honest eye on the black grass, explain how hedging our fuel has paid out again, and deal with the frustration of repairing trial dig damage across our seed beds. From perfect drilling weather to the thinking behind the whole system, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
