James heads to Australia to visit a truly impressive dairy operation, where over 1,100 cows are milked twice a day. Hosted by Ed Cox at Waterhatch Dairy, this episode explores how large-scale Australian dairy farming works — from logistics and machinery to feed systems and long-term farm strategy.
We look at how the farm manages its own haulage fleet, produces maize silage and hay at scale, and balances dairy and beef enterprises. There’s also discussion around growth hormones, genetics and productivity, alongside a rare look at calves being born and the realities of running a multi-generation dairy business.
Beyond livestock, we explore the broader farming system — including direct drilling with Great Plains kit, Claas tractors, wind turbines and solar installations helping power the operation. We even catch up with a former P.X. harvest student now back farming his own farm in Australia.
This is a fascinating comparison between UK and Australian agriculture, showing the scale, efficiency and challenges of dairy farming on the other side of the world.
If you farm dairy — UK or overseas — we’d love to know: what surprised you most about Australian systems?
