It’s another long, early morning out on the potato farm — and this one starts before the sun even comes up. The crew’s already out digging by 6:30 a.m., and I’m jumping in the pull tractor to help out. We’re starting on a sandy corner of the field, which means one thing… trucks getting stuck! Between the soft ground and heavy loads, it’s a constant battle to keep things moving, but with a few good yanking ropes and a lot of teamwork, we keep the harvest rolling.

As the day goes on, the sun burns off the fog and we finally get into a groove. Even though it’s sandy, the potato quality in this section is actually really good — solid yields, great size, and those classic Norkota skins. Later in the day, I swing by the cellar to check on the loads coming in, and the spuds look fantastic: smooth skins, minimal bruising, and great color. We had some issues with one field full of second-year potatoes and a bit of rot, but overall the harvest is going strong.

After a full day of pulling stuck trucks and checking the cellar, it’s time to switch gears — literally. I head out to get the swather ready to cut our fourth crop of hay before the weather turns. That means swapping out dull knives for sharp new ones so we can get a clean cut, even on laid-down hay. Once the wind picks up and keeps the dew away, I fire up the swather and get rolling late into the night under the lights. It’s dusty, dark, and tough to see, but the hay’s laying down nice and the new blades are doing their job.

By the end of the night, the dew starts settling in, so we call it a day. Another sunrise-to-sunset kind of grind — potatoes by day, hay by night. That’s life on the farm!
