After two straight days of rain, mud, and cold weather shutting us down, we finally got back into the field to see if we could dig some potatoes. And the first thing I noticed? These Burbank potatoes look incredible. In my opinion they taste better than the Norkotas, but either way, these are some of the best Burbanks we have grown in a while. Big size, clean skins, hardly any eliminators, and the cellar is already filling up fast.
Because of the cold morning, we didn’t start harvesting until noon, which means we’re running this crew until midnight. While Dad was windrowing 16 rows at a time, I headed eight miles out to chisel plow the ground we’re putting into spuds next spring. Long day in the tractor, moving pivots, working short rows, and trying to finish before dark so I don’t have to haul the tractor back again tomorrow.
When I finally made it back to the farm, things got too muddy for the trucks and crossover, so the crew had to shut down early. But the potatoes they DID get dug look fantastic. We’re putting these Burbanks in the back of the AC-cooled cellar so we can store them longer into next year.
