Today we’re diving into a massive day of field work before the ground freezes. We’ve got manure trucks running nonstop for the next week, and Josh and I are in the two big tillage tractors trying to get every acre worked up while we still can. The Case 620 Quadtrac and our tuned John Deere 9510 are ripping through ground like crazy — this is the fastest we’ve ever covered acreage.

The day starts early with fueling and greasing (the Case burns 350 gallons a day 😳), and of course I already found a bent bolt and a missing nut on the chisel plow. With 1,500 acres left and only a couple weeks before freeze-up, every minute counts. You’ll see us fixing parts on the fly, racing each other across the field, skipping rows so the slower tractor can fill in behind, and trying not to break something before Trevor gets back from town with the right hardware.

We’re prepping this ground for potatoes next year — it’ll get Vapam and Telone to clean up verticillium and nematodes that hurt our crop this season. That means we HAVE to get it worked before the soil locks up. Last year we were chiseling frozen ground and broke the baskets off the machine… not doing that again.

You’ll also see what the rest of the crew has been up to:
• Chris planting fall wheat with our brand-new 30 ft LEMKEN Solitaire DT900 drill (and testing a new camera).
• Trevor rebuilding our DEF transfer setup.
• Truck repairs, door panels falling off, oil leaks, broken chutes, and everything else that always hits during fall work.
• Josh discing in manure before the rain shut us down.
• Pivot moving, field finishing, and the fastest field-work day we’ve ever had.

This is the real behind-the-scenes of fall on our farm — lots of horsepower, lots of dirt, lots of fixing, and trying to beat the weather every single day.
