100 ton Lancaster bomber sculpture, On Freedom’s Wings,

3.28pm - Thursday 21st May 2026 865

After eight years of planning work and construction, this 100 tons life-size sculpture of a Lancaster bomber has opened to the public. It’s called On Freedom‘s Wings and is the work of the Bomber County Gateway Trust which was set up to run the project.

My my partner, Rhonda and I were very privileged for be invited to the official opening ceremony. We heard from Charlie White, who’s farm On Freedom’s Wings proudly sits, not many can say they have a life size Lancaster bomber in their back garden! We also heard from other trustees who told us how the idea came about and the Building of it, the huge finances potentially involved but also local companies coming forward to offer their expertise and particular line of work for free.

We also heard why the Lancaster sits in that exact location which goes back to the night of September 18/19 1942 and the mission Lancaster R5689 VN-N was sent on. We hear why the aircraft didn’t make it back to RAF Swinderby and also what happened to the crew which were Canadian and Australian Airmen.

Finances are still extremely tight so all donations are extremely welcome, big or small. The following Linc is where this can be done and will be hugely appreciated by the trustees of bomber County Gateway trust. Thank you.
