Farm update 391 Moving straw inside for winter, Simba Solo & X-Press working, planting cover crops

4.00pm - Thursday 11th September 2025 12,110

A really busy mid week update.

Last year we had a lot of the top bales of straw stacks damaged by the rain because they were stood outside and so this year as we have an empty shed, I’ve decided to help Paul out and put as many inside as we can. We have an empty shed due to not storing oil seed rape this year so this will take the pressure off Paul and mean he can collect the bales throughout the winter and concentrate on other farms where he has stacks outside.

We’re also planting cover crops which are in our SFI scheme (Sustainable Farming Incentive), but there was quite a lot of weeds in the stubble so we’re chopping them and working the top with the Simba X-Press before planting them with the Weaving Sabre Tine drill.

Tom has started working the fields for next year spring Bali with the Simba solo. It’s so dry it’s a really good chance to get it done before any rain.
