Farm update 407 Louth Christmas Fatstock show & auction, spraying Round up on the frost

8.00am - Sunday 4th January 2026 12,048

Have you ever wondered what happens at a livestock auction? Every year before Christmas Louth livestock market have their fat stock show and auction. I went along to see the livestock being judged and the champions of different classes sold. I chat to David Read who is a very well-known Lincoln red beef farmer but he is giving up and he explains to me why.

I also chat to the Judge Richard about what he is looking for to make a champion.

I get shown around the sheep by Nick Dowler who explains all the different breeds and what goes on during the sale day.

I’ve been waiting for the right weather to spray glyphosate (round up) on some fields destined to be planted with spring barley in March. The cold weather this week brought the optimum conditions so I explain why it is important the fields are sprayed and talk about the high levels of Blackgrass in one field.
