Today on the farm we’re tackling a mix of irrigation upgrades and pivot maintenance to keep water moving where it needs to go.

We start by pulling out an old concrete headgate in the ditch and replacing it with a new pipe setup that can act as a controlled overflow point. The goal is simple: keep the ditch from backing up and protect a nearby house and field corner when the pump can’t keep up. We fine-tune the elevation and placement so excess water will safely spill into a controlled area instead of flooding the wrong spots.

After getting the headgate situation dialed in, we move straight into pivot irrigation work. That includes swapping out sprinkler packages, replacing nozzles, and upgrading drops so the system is easier to maintain in the future. The new setup is designed so we can clean and service sprinklers at chest height instead of dealing with ladders, soaked sleeves, and clogged overhead nozzles.

We also discover a mismatch in nozzle sizing and pivot design, which means we’ll need to adjust lengths and likely rework a few sections before finishing the rest of the system. Instead of doing the entire pivot blindly, we test the first span to make sure everything fits right before committing to the full run.

It’s a full day of digging, adjusting, testing, and problem-solving—but that’s just normal life when you’re trying to keep irrigation running efficiently on a working farm.
