Day 14 of wheat harvest turned into a race against the weather!

We started the day hoping to knock out as much wheat as possible before the next round of storms rolled in. After harvesting more than 300 acres the day before, we were trying to finish several more fields and get closer to the end of wheat harvest.

But this field had a BIG problem — wild oats. There were areas where the wild oats were so thick that they actually laid the wheat completely flat, making it difficult for the combine to pick up. We also had some downgrain from the wind, a few combine adjustments, and a header problem that brought us to a stop.

Thankfully, it turned out to be nothing major — just some loose bolts that needed to be tightened up.

We kept pushing through the heat, dust, wild oats and increasingly nasty weather. Then, just as we moved to the final field and started loading trucks, the rain finally caught us. With lightning all around us, we had to get the grain loaded, trucks tarped, and equipment secured before the storm got any worse.

Will we be able to finish wheat harvest before the weather shuts us down?
