After years of sitting idle with a cracked head, we decided it would be worth a try to swap the old d-691 diesel for a 1970 JD404 that came out of a 7700 combine. It took quite a bit of modifications to bolt the old green engine up but overall I am surprised how well it came together. The non turbo 404 is rated around 100 hp compared to the old international's 120hp (in its prime, with the cracked head it was probably 50hp). It can push a mound of dirt fairly well but still obviously isn't a powerhouse. One problem we found out after is the max rpm of the d-691 is it is at max hp and torque around 1400 rpm but the 404 being a harvester engine produces its hp around 2200 rpm. So even in the lowest gear it runs 3-4 mph max rpm, but on the bright side it'll scoot down the road at 8-10 mph in high! With the worn out cable clutch's and the inability to push real slow it doesn't make for a very good dirt moving machine. If the 404 had a turbo I'm sure it'd have a lot more torque. Maybe someday we'll find a use for her but for now it was a great learning project and a lot of fun to drive around:)

I want to give a special thanks to CyberLink for an excellent editing software! PowerDirector 12 Ultra is worth it!
