Questions:
"She can't possibly be left with nothing, the military gives benefits?"
A: I would have assumed too, as did Sarah and her husband. Sadly that's NOT the case. The military support services informed her that benefits die with the soldier. They even YANKED OUT the pension and disability check he had been paid that month . . . and her dental services were suddenly terminated (as well as healthcare)
"Can't she just get a job?"
A: yes, she is working on that. But also trying to wrap her head around what happened. She has to heal, and this is how we help her heal.
"Couldn't they have gotten OTHER life insurance?"
A: Yes. But life in the military is very organized, and switching to civilian life takes adjusting. Believe me, it IS different and can be hard to adjust to. He had only been retired 2 years and were still trying to figure life out. Besides . . . MOST insurance companies will DENY coverage to suicide, especially if it's within 2 years. She would have been out of luck REGARDLESS.
