How do you tan a small animal fur? Easy! Farm Girl walks you through the basics of how to brain tan a fur from start to finish!
But can she make it through skinning the raccoon before she throws up?!
*There are many ways to tan an animal skin, and brain tanning is a cheap and easy way to do it! This particular recipe calls for what's known as a "pickle". The salt helps push the vinegar into the hide to help flush out the "mucous". This is what makes a hide dry stiff. Proper flushing will allow better brain penetration and less work to soften.
After the vinegar bath, soak hide in a neutralizing solution of 2 gallons water to 1/4 cup baking soda for 20 minutes. Rinse again with water and squeeze out extra liquid. This is also important because if it's too acidic it won't soften well and the mucous might not be all the way flushed. I don't think I soaked my possom long enough in the neutralizing solution.
The brains are pure brain purreed and mashed and gently simmered on the stove for 5 minutes with a small bit of water. They are also excellent served over mashed potatoes!
One pig brain will be plenty for two brainings on a small animal hide. I like have extra on hand in case I need it, and they freeze and thaw very easily. Buy several at once and freeze in a ziplock for later use!
