As first generation farmers, everything we do is a test run. So it came as no surprise when we decided to butcher our pet cows Cookie and Ginger.. Many people warned us that 3 year old cows will be tough and only good for burger. However, for Belted Galloway Short Horn crosses, 3 years is listed as the perfect age for this slow-growing, grass finishing breed.
Our original plan had been to breed them, but with Cookie's horns growing into her head, and Ginger's apparent hernia (bad genetics on both), we reluctantly decided to send them to the chop shop!
These cows were fully organic, and refused to eat anything but lush pasture grass during their last 4 months of life, turning down both molasses covered corn and molasses covered feed.
Will Farm Girl be able to get the cows off to market without issue, or will things go the normal course of crazy calamities?
Will the meat be any good, or will they have 700 pounds of burger?!
Is Farm Girl REALLY planning on turning them into PILLOWS?!
