Potato harvest is finally underway… but it definitely did NOT go as planned.

After a crazy thunderstorm dropped more than an inch of rain and golf-ball-sized hail, our first field turned into a lake and was way too muddy to harvest. We eventually had to move to a sandy field and hope it was wet enough to keep the trucks from getting stuck.

Then the fun really started.

With my foot still broken, I couldn't do much of the normal work, but I ended up spending a good part of the day driving our John Deere 8430 around pulling potato trucks out of the sand with a Yankum Rope. We also had problems with the harvester, including a bad fan clutch, plugged belts, vines wrapping around the rollers, and plenty of stuck trucks.

Despite all the problems, we still managed to get a lot of potatoes out of the ground and got a good look at what this field is going to yield.

This is what potato harvest really looks like on the farm — wet fields, dry sand, broken equipment, stuck trucks, and a whole lot of potatoes.
