Potato harvest is officially underway! Today we’re testing everything out before we really get going, and the potatoes are looking surprisingly good.

The potatoes have a great shape, but they’re smaller than we’d like after a tough growing season. We’re also trying to figure out how to leave the smallest potatoes in the field while still getting enough into the truck to fill our contract.

I’ll take you through our potato harvester, show you how the sizing system works, explain how we try to keep dirt and vines out of the cellar, and give you a look at how everything works from the field all the way into storage.

Of course, the first day of harvest wouldn’t be complete without a few problems. We had a fan belt that needed adjustment, a breaker trip at the cellar, and a dirt piler that needed some attention. Hopefully that’s not a sign of what’s coming over the next few weeks!

Tomorrow we’ll be going full bore into potato harvest, and we expect to be digging for several weeks.
