A massive fire broke out on the Indian reservation and strong winds pushed it toward our fields, forcing firefighters, including Trevor, to work through the night to keep it from jumping the river and reaching nearby wheat fields. While the fire raged, we were busy raking second crop hay in hot, dry, and windy conditions. Moisture was tricky to read, with the baler showing 10% while the probe read 20%, so we played it safe and kept raking 400 acres to prep for baling when the dew came on. The fire burned a huge stretch of sagebrush and dry grass but luckily stopped at the river, sparing the farmland. Trevor and the crew even had to evacuate 400 girls from a nearby camp as 50 mph winds spread the flames fast. We wrapped the day by keeping pivots running to protect our sandy potato fields and checking the ditch water levels. A long, smoky day full of raking, fire-fighting, and praying the flames stayed out of the crops.
