Snow on the fields, 25-degree temps, and planting season right around the corner… welcome to spring farming in Idaho.
Today started cold with a skiff of snow covering the ground, which delayed us from starting pivots because we definitely don’t want to freeze the crop in the ground. Instead, I headed out to get back to chisel plowing and check on the seed potatoes in storage.
The potatoes are healing up nicely after being cut. We dust them and let them sit 7–10 days so the cuts can seal before planting. Some of them are already ready to go, but with freezing temperatures outside, planting is going to wait until Monday.
Before heading to the field, I had to fuel up, grease the chisel plow, and inspect the hubs after one of the bearings failed on my dad’s machine. Parts are hard to get right now, so hopefully we don’t have another breakdown.
Then it was time to head to a brand-new rented field… and this place is ALL sand. We’ve never planted potatoes in ground quite like this before, so this season should be interesting. The field had corn in it last year, so we’re working through a lot of residue while trying to get the ground ready for spuds.
We also had Titan Machinery out helping diagnose an exhaust leak and later fixing GPS issues on the tractor. That’s one thing about farm equipment — service matters.
To top it all off, Dad and I ended up racing tractors across the field while chisel plowing.
Hope you guys enjoy today’s video!
